2018 Program Information
The next CATALySES program will be held Sunday, June 17 – Friday, June 29, 2018 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The program consists of day and evening activities. On-campus housing is provided. Applicants must commit to being present and engaged in all components of the two-week summer institute.

Application packets consist of the application, 3-4 short personal statements (these statements are critical in the review process), and a school support statement that is signed by your principal or another appropriate administrator.
Applications can be submitted online from January through mid-March. The support statement can be emailed separately to firstname.lastname@example.org.
CATALySES Program Information
CATALySES: Emerging Pathogens is a partnership program, joining the talents of high school teachers and university research faculty and students. For the partnership to be successful with measurable outcomes, teachers must commit to the following:
- Attend the two-week NIH SEPA CATALySES Institute at UF (Summer, 2018) and create an Action Research Proposal, incorporating emerging pathogens research into a classroom-ready unit;
- Implement Action Research Proposals in classrooms during the 2018/2019 school year;
- Model and promote learning via authentic science and engineering practices;
- Provide in-service training to other teachers in school or district where possible;
- Share progress with CATALySES program participants, coordinators, and evaluators;
- Support research team efforts to secure IRB approval from the school and gather student and parent consent to participate;
- Present results of Action Proposal at Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium (JSEHS) held at UF (February 10 -12, 2019) and in a format publishable on the internet.
It is essential for the participant’s school and district to provide modest support to insure successful local implementation of the CATALySES: Emerging Pathogens partnership program. For the partnership to be successful with measurable outcomes, schools must commit to the following:
- Encourage and support teachers in implementing school Action Research Proposals including supporting IRB protocol and student data gathering;
- Permit CATALySES staff to visit the classroom for observation and support as the teacher requests;
- Allow release to report Action Research Proposal results at JSEHS and professional meetings (2-3 days/year);
- Promote and support teacher leadership of inservice training at school and district levels;
- Recognize teachers for their extended inservice, service-learning and community-oriented activities, and CATALySES-related curricular development and testing;
The CATALySES Partnership commits the following to participating teachers:
- Stipend for successful completion of the summer institute and program requirements;
- Access to biotechnology equipment and emerging pathogens activity lockers;
- Professional on-site support for classroom activities;
- Continued communication and assistance from UF partners;
- Expertise and support in modifying curricula to align with national and state standards;
- Priority seating in other workshops for teachers offered by the University of Florida and coordinated by CPET;
- Opportunity to participate in subsequent summer research internships in UF research laboratories.
