I am part of the 1998 TRUE summer program at the University of Florida.

I also attended the 1994 ICE(Institute for Chemical Education) summer program at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin Chemistry Fundamentals, as well as the 1995 ICE summer program at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado Physics Fundamentals.

I would highly recommend all these programs for any science teacher who would like to improve his/her knowledge of science content, methods of instruction, and ways to use hands on activities as part of an effective science program. Each of these summer programs are extremely well organized and designed to instruct along with letting each teacher share valuable methods and activities with each other.

My research project for this summer at TRUE very briefly put is the anaerobic digestion of solid waste (paper, lawn waste, and etc.) into methane as a usable fuel and the undigested portion to be used as a soil conditioner. I plan to take this back to my classroom in Tennessee and let my students design their own digesters in two liter bottles and hopefully observe the methane burning.

I am working in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Dept., and my research professor is David P. Chynoweth, MPH, Ph.D. I am also working with Dr. Paul Lane and Dr. Jose Sifontes. Dr. Sifontes is presently working for the sustainability of the environment by marketing the anaerobic digestion process to produce a burnable fuel. This fuel burns far cleaner than oil or coal while producing effluent that can be used as a conditioner for soils. Also, disease-causing bacteria in organic waste are killed by the anaerobic process.
