  • PAM/ IDA___________________________________

The Planetary Aerosol Monitor / Integrated Dust Analyzer instrument will journey across the dust tail of comets. Measuring 0.1 Micrometer size dust particle as it will be shooting through the instrument from mach 1 up to mach 10 speeds keeps the research rocking.

    DESIGN

An alert laser beam detector will trigger more light diodes to count time, to measure size, and to calculate the angle of entry for each dust particle from the comet.

    DEVELOPMENT

The PAM/IDA Probe must meet qualifications of NASA, pass the program's scaled electromagnetic calibration tests, and withstand the parameters of space travel. A special design microwave laboratory in the astrophysics department made testing as rigorous and accurate as possible. The microwave laboratory is one of two in the world. Dust grains are magnified then modeled for our microwave scale test. The computer calculates light scatters off the dust particles. Other tests include shooting a Helium gas gun and blasting a plasma gun in a vacuum chamber to measure grain velocity.
