(Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement High School Level (9th - 12th)
Well, well. So what do you know? Here I am and
here you are looking at me. Who would have known this day would
come? We may as well get to know each other.
About Me
I am Aida (I-e-da) Fraser-Hammer. I live in Spokane, Washington where I work for Washington State University. I am the high school coordinator of the MESA (Mathematics,Engineering, Science Achievement) Program which is conducted within the five high schools in Spokane's Public School system. Spokane MESA is just one of four MESA Centers in Washington State. Our classrooms provide hands-on activities, field trips and classroom speakers in math and science fields for females and students of color. The focus of MESA is to equip our students with the tools essential for academic success in these areas and hence increase the probability that they will enter the math/science career fields. My TRUE Experience
I viewed the opportunity to become a participant of the TRUE
(Teacher Research Update Experience) Program first as a wonderful
learning experience, second as a challenge, and thirdly as a
necessity. The entire experience definitely surpassed my
expectations.
For six weeks in the summer of 1998, I worked with Iske
Vandervelde at the University of Florida compiling one and a half
years' worth of data on manatees. We worked on entering numeric
data regarding the behavior of seven manatees at Homosassa
Springs. Iske is trying to determine the correlation between
hormonal activity and the reproductive behavior of manatees.
My work was actually a continuation of the work done
by 1997 TRUE participant, Debbie
Hubbell . She did an awesome job!
Iske's research is very interesting and I learned a great deal
from my experience.
