The Teacher Research Update Experience (TRUE) is an awesome program!

Carole A. Allore

Kissimmee, Florida

The Challenge Center

All sciences in grades 9 through 12. I teach at a work-to-school program located at Disney University. All of my students are at-risk.

We have a student body of 64.

Unfortunately, I do not have a home or school E-mail address.

My lab/research project is a dream come true. I am building a small TJ-PROtm Robot. My lab partner Betty Braun and "advisor" has the greatest patience with me. I am learning many new skills. Soldering has been my most challenging to date. I am certain that there will be many challenges ahead, not only in building the robot, but in computing the robot.

This is an especially exciting lab for me as last school year I was able to talk WDW into sponsoring my students in the FIRST Robotic Competition. Although, I was present I was just an observer as Disney engineers worked with the students. Now I will be able to introduce the students to robotics and have them build their own robots before the competition. This is truly exciting!!!

The lectures are interesting. It is great to be with the students. They are so bright . It’s nice to see that our future will be safe in their hands. The lectures are exposing me to some of the bright minds in the scientific and academic world. They have also brought me a new respect for the University of Florida. I honestly was excited by the NSF Program, but was not too excited about the University of Florida. You know how we Northerners are when we talk about the south. I guess I am truly becoming a Floridian. UFL is a World Class University.

One of the bonus aspects of this experience is the truly interesting and nice group of my fellow classmates. They represent the finest in their fields, are helpful and as an extra bonus have a terrific sense of humor.

I have been to other fellowships and workshops and find that this is a stellar one. I know that I will be a much better teacher and person for having had this experience.
