Overview
TRUE offers middle and high school science, mathematics and technology
teachers from across America the opportunity to update their content knowledge
by participating in research on the campus of one of the nation's leading
research universities. During the first week, teachers work together in
a "hands on" biotechnology workshop. In weeks two through seven, they become
part of a University of Florida research laboratory related to their area
of interest. Guided by top university scientists, they develop, carry out,
and analyze the results of an individual research project. Participants
also attend lectures, tour research facilities, visit local sites of scientific
and ecological interest, and participate in seminars and work groups designed
to help them relate the research experience to the classroom and develop
leadership skills. The program has grown from nineteen participants in
1996 to thirty participants in 1997. These thirty participants represent
seventeen states.
TRUE is supported by a National
Science Foundation grant to the Center for Precollegiate Education
and Training (CPET) at UF. Teachers selected for the program will receive
up to $300 for travel costs, free on-campus housing, a $525 meal allowance,
a stipend of $2100, and $200 to implement their Action Plans. Graduate
continuing education credits are available.
