Special Explorations for Teachers and Students (SETS)
Human DNA Fingerprinting
In this experiment, students isolate their own DNA and use Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify a region of DNA on chromosome 16. Students then use agarose gel electrophoresis to separate the DNA by size and compare their DNA pattern on the gel with the rest of the class. Students learn current concepts in forensics and genetic testing, and discuss terms such as homozygous and heterozygous. Site visits and guest speakers will be arranged as time allows.
(Please note this laboratory takes ~6 hours.)
This Exploration is available to advanced students in upper grades. Each laboratory includes 8 work stations with a maximum of 32 students. In lieu of the UF Experience exploration, the students will have the opportunity to visit the Reitz Union and UF Bookstore/Welcome Center for lunch.
**AP classes from different schools may try to coordinate visits on the same dates, provided the total number of students does not exceed 32.
The cost of this Exploration is $375.
