Special Explorations for Teachers and Students (SETS)
DNA Science I
Deoxyribonucleic acid is as much fun to say as it is to work with. Students will extract DNA from plant cells so they can visualize genetic material. Students can take their plant cell DNA home with them. To enhance their learning of the structure of DNA, students can construct candy DNA models that are a tasty treat for the ride back home. Gel electrophoresis is a standard technique employed in every molecular biology laboratory. After casting their own gels, students learn about how gel electrophoresis works by loading their own dye samples onto an agarose gel. They then determine the size of the "DNA" fragments and compare the banding patterns to see if any of the samples are the same.
This exploration is most appropriate for grades 6-8.
The cost of this Exploration is $250.
