What is TRUE? TRUE (Teacher Research Update Experience) is a unique summer research program for Science, Math, and Technology teachers on the campus of the University of Florida. TRUE offers teachers an opportunity to become involved in seven weeks of laboratory research, and establish professional networks with colleagues and research faculty. It is a chance to work with top research scientists at one of the nation's leading research universities.

During the first week, TRUE participants work in a Biotechnology lab workshop. For the remainder of the program each participant is assigned to a leading field or laboratory scientist where they develop, carry out, and analyze the results of an individual research project, according to their individual interests or backgrounds. Teachers will be learning current concepts and applications in medicine, conservation, engineering, physics, biotechnology and computers. The teachers visit significant scientific and ecological sites and use new technology.

In addition, teachers attend lectures, tour research facilities, and collect instructional materials to take back to their individual schools. Perhaps one of the most rewarding opportunities is the sharing of best teaching practices with scientists at UF and colleagues from across the nation. The 1998 TRUE program included 31 teachers from 17 states. Participating teachers are from as far away as Honolulu, Hawaii and as close as Gainesville, Florida.

The TRUE program is supported by a National Science Foundation grant to the Center for Precollegiate Education and Training (CPET) at UF. Teachers selected for the program receive up to $300 for travel costs, free on-campus housing, a $525 meal allowance, a stipend of $2100, and $200 to implement their Action Plans. Graduate continuing education credits are available.
