Science Quest
2007
The 48 participants of this year’s program were gifted tenth grade students, representing 23 counties and 42 schools in Florida and one participant from Germany. Each was selected because of an expressed interest in science and a demonstrated motivation to achieve in the classroom.
Science Quest immerses students in various science disciplines to stimulate interest and appreciation for the range of college and career opportunities. Students experience college life by living in a campus dorm, by attending a variety of short lectures, by participating in demonstrations and hands-on activities, by visiting research laboratories and other facilities, and by doing science experiments. This year’s participants examined plastinated human specimens, analyzed DNA, studied Florida’s natural history, explored caves and springs, learned about bioengineering, toured the coldest spot on earth, and experienced the fun of chemistry and physics.
The students not only learned a great deal but also had an enjoyable time at the University of Florida. They experienced research fields they didn’t know existed and had the opportunity to explore the campus and interact with the University faculty and students. Many plan to return to UF for their college careers.
