Summer Science Institute
Program Overview
Celebrate Science!
In recognition of the Year of Science (YoS2009), this workshop will explore many areas of the university. Participants will have the opportunity to work with researchers from across campus and beyond as we delve into topics that are significant to the YoS2009. Celebrate the anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the publishing of On the Origin of Species as we look at evolutionary biology. We’ll turn our gaze to the stars as Galileo did 400 years ago in recognition of the International Year of Astronomy and investigate global warming and biodiversity loss as the International Polar Year wraps-up its focus on the Arctic. This special offering will include not only the latest research but also the nature of science. We will employ modern research methods and equipment, as well as activities and experiments, appropriate for middle and high school classrooms.
Dates: June 29-July 2, 2009
Time: 8:30am-4:30pm (with additional evening activities)
Registration cost: $350
On-campus housing: $150
Aquatic Systems: Emerging Problems and Creative Solutions
This Institute highlights some of the most significant research on coastal and inland aquatic systems in Florida. Institute activities will include extensive field work and bench laboratory activities suitable for IB, AP, regular high school and advanced middle school classes. The course will examine the interconnectedness of water, and will emphasize the contaminants (metals, endocrine disrupters, plant and animal toxins, pathogenic organisms) that affect human and environmental health. Remediation technologies appropriate for student involvement will also be explored.
