2007 - Genetics in Medicine

Mini Medical School
Genetics of Medicine
Wednesday, November 14, 2007
145 registrants; 98 attendees (max capacity 100); 25 counties
University of Florida College of Medicine / Cancer Genetics Research Complex

Genetics in Medicine was the theme of the 2007 Mini Medical School. The University of Florida has numerous research and clinical faculty working together in this area which is radically changing our understanding of disease progression and treatment. Many volunteered their time to assist with Mini Medical School as we welcomed our largest group of participants.

Dr. Judith Wubah opened the day with a presentation about the importance of mitochondria and the role it plays in genetic disease. Following lunch, Ms. Lisa Brown used participants to role-play two scenarios commonly addressed by genetic counselors. Dr. Julie Johnson highlighted several studies that show a clear link between drug treatment efficacy and genotype. The day concluded with a look at epigenetics by Dr. Kevin Brown who presented research related to epigenetic control in breast cancer.

18 faculty members opened their laboratories for the participants to have the rare opportunity of seeing research in action. The participants also had the chance to exchange teaching lessons that have proven successful in their classrooms.

This year’s 145 registrants represented the counties of: Alachua, Brevard, Broward, Citrus, Clay, Dade, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Leon, Madison, Manatee, Marion, Nassau, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Polk, Sarasota, Seminole, Union, and Volusia.

This event is coordinated each year by the UF Center for Precollegiate Education and Training with sponsorship from the UF Medical Guild and luncheon sponsorship courtesy of Shands HealthCare.
