Neuroscience was the theme of the 2008 Mini Medical School. The University of Florida has numerous research and clinical faculty working together in this area which is radically changing our understanding of disease progression and treatment. Many volunteered their time to assist with Mini Medical School as we welcomed one of our largest groups of participants.
Dr. Jeffrey Kleim opened the day with a presentation about neural plasticity. Drawing on his research, Dr. Kleim addressed how neural plasticity naturally occurs and ways to encourage the brain to be even more flexible and recover after injury. Following lunch, Dr. Dennis Steindler highlighted work supporting the use of stem cells to develop personalized therapeutic treatments for disease, particularly neurological disorders. The day concluded with a look at addiction by Dr. William Greene who presented research related to addiction in adolescents and its implications for further behavioral and health problems.
Twenty faculty members opened their laboratories for the participants to have the rare opportunity of seeing research in action. The participants also had the chance to exchange teaching lessons that have proven successful in their classrooms.
